PERIODONTICS
Periodontics studies the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases and conditions that affect the tissues that support the dental organs (gingiva, periodontal ligament, root cementum and alveolar bone) and the implanted substitutes, for the maintenance of health, function and aesthetics of the teeth and their adjacent tissues.
ā
Nowadays, with the advent of implantology, periodontics is also responsible for the prevention and treatment of peri-implant diseases such as peri-implantitis.
ā
The main periodontal diseases that affect teeth are periodontitis and gingivitis.
ā
Periodontal disease manifests itself as gingivitis (inflammation and bleeding of the gum without affecting the bone) or periodontitis, where the destruction of the bone that supports the tooth occurs. If not treated in time it can cause tooth loss.
ā
A periodontal treatment consists of correcting the hygiene technique to control bacterial plaque, to eliminating its triggering factors (dental calculus or tartar and periodontal pockets).
